1,000 Words: My personal family

A lot of people start their definition of family scientifically, defining the term as people related genetically or by blood. I dont. I am not related genetically to anyone in my family except my baby sister, we were adopted at birth. This has given me the freedom to define “family,” and mine mean the world to me, from my baby sister to my Mom and Dad to my Nanna and all my Aunts, Uncles, and Cousins. Some people will put God atop their list of most important things, my list will always start with my family-my whole family.
Tomorrow they are all coming for Christmas Eve, however a part of my family tree will not be here for that celebration and those people are who this is about. I have a personal family, one that includes but is not limited to the people in the previous paragraph.
See besides those relatives I have:
A Charlie
A Second Little Sister: Alexa
Two Little Brothers:
Michael
Dustin
and
Three Brothers:
John, Ben, and Ian
They all mean the world to me and are a truly amazing group of individuals. I can’t thank them enough for all they’ve done for me.

I Don’t Sleep

A good friend of mine has had trouble sleeping lately. If you want to read about his adventures travel to his blog. I however sleep extremely soundly, when I force myself to close my eyes. The problem is that I dream…a lot…and they aren’t good dreams. Everything I regret and everything I hate and everything I fear seem to come to me in my dreams. To be honest I fear falling asleep, I fear facing those images and those scenes molded and manipulated into horror film like scenarios.
So I’ve been keeping myself awake in a few ways.
I’m working on a web page for the Randolph-Macon Yellow Jacket Newspaper, which if you’d like you can check out here.
I’ve been watching a horrible amount of netflix. My new Favorite show is White Collar. I highly recommend it.
Right now, however, I am writing this so I don’t have to write a paper for English because I fear my mood will effect how the paper turns out. You see it’s about how society effects a males idea of what a “man” is…I think if I continue writing at this moment it will just turn into a rant about…stuff.
Things I Hate 5: What I’ve Become

I say things like bah humbug and pretend I’m 82 and own a dog whose as equally mad at the world as I am.”
Thus prompting me to think long and hard about the persona I have birthed, my Frankenstein Monster if you will. Here is my list of inspirations (in pictures!)

I am particularly fond of that last one.
THINGS I HATE 4: This wasn’t what I thought it would be
Posted: November 23, 2011 Filed under: comedy, movies, plans, rants | Tags: change, disney, drama, hating, hoping, Humor, life, love, Movies, people. teens. girls, princess, quote, rant, reality, stupid, talking, theatrics, things, things I hate, thought, waiting, wanting, watsky Leave a comment »There is no plan for this blog post, no outline, and, just as most thoughts in my life often do, will probably turn into a rambling that I can’t say I’m proud of. So…here goes….
George Watsky, in this video, says, “If stereotypes start with a grain of truth, clichés begin with a bolder.” I’d say he’s right, more often than not clichés hold some grain of truth, though, quite recently, I have found a commonly used cliché that is the exception to this whole “bolder” of truth thing:
“If you love something let it go, if it returns you know its yours forever”
I’ll start by saying that it really irks me that after going through a half-hearted search, I cannot find who said those words. Why? Why? Why? Why does no one think to credit the human being who uttered these stupid words that now litter my facebook news feed?
You know what? I’ll take credit for it….a long long time ago I said those words which 15 year old angsty emotional little people find so relevant to their lives (note: I’m not actually taking credit for saying the quote above and would really enjoy not being sued).
Secondly, how ludicrous are the actual words or what they mean or are manipulated into meaning by the “wannabe Disney Princesses” of the world. Let us break this quote apart; let us dissect it if you will. Let us start at the beginning, for that is the logical place to start:
“If you love something let it go”
Stupid
Stupid
Stupid
Why if you love something would you let it go? You’d try to keep it, I mean why would I let my dog run away…certainly not because I loved it, I mean what if it got hit by a car…well then its certainly not mine “forever.”
Now I’m not condoning hostage situations. If the thing you love wants to leave, begs to leave, asks to leave, says in order to be happy they must leave, then let them go! Letting someone go for their sake is letting someone go because you love them but the quote implies that there comes a time for you to let the person,or thing, you love go just simply to see if it comes back to you down the road. God if that isn’t manipulative and stupid.
Part 2: “If it returns you know its yours forever.” First off that’s extremely possessive. The whole point of the quote is that the implication is that the “something” is a human being that you happen to love and so saying its “yours forever” is extremely possessive and naive. If some one loves me I don’t want them to say that I’m theirs. I mean I’ll say it and that’s fine but I sure as hell am not anyone’s property, though if that’s what you strive to be, then I guess more power to ya.
Secondly, what are you doing in the time your waiting for the “something” to “return”? Your waiting, you’re wasting your life, banking on the idea that something YOU let go will come back to you. This is not THE NOTEBOOK PEOPLE nor is it TWIGHLIGHT for that matter (though that’s a subject for another time).
Thirdly, there is no such thing as “forever” and there sure as hell is no guarantee of a forever just cause “something” comes back. Do we all understand now why this quote is stupid and will leave our youth (I can say that cause I’m an old man) disappointed and jaded because they have been filled with this fantastical crap?
I mean yes there’s hope. There’s always hope, don’t give up on hope, but stop with the fantastical theatrics (he says ironically).
I lied there actually was a plan for this blog and that was to talk about how I feel as though I have slowly become unable to hold a meaningful conversation which is really sad because it’s perhaps the thing I find to be the greatest pleasure in the world. Guess I got sidetracked huh?
Next Broadway Star Semifinalist
Posted: November 10, 2011 Filed under: Theatre | Tags: Broadway, Cambridge, City, college, Dance, Dreams, Friend, History, hope, New York, New York City, people, Pursue, Singing, Video, Vote, Want 1 Comment »I’ve had quite a few friends/people I’ve known go off to New York City to pursue their dreams. I met Mariana Carolina Leon the summer after my 10th grade year at Cambridge College Program in England. She is a great person, who’s smile and heart are bigger than she is, and she has decided to pursue her dream of being on Broadway and has made it a long way but she needs votes. Check out her video and cast a vote for her by clicking the like box above the video.
This is what they say about her: “The girl from next door is here to rock the Broadway world. Don’t be fooled by her good girl looks because she knocked the socks off the judges by her performance. Duncan said she is the “surprise” package and challenged her to move away from the good girl image. Let’s see if Mariana can do just that in the semifinals!
Mariana is a Musical Theater major at the Boston Conservatory. She has been studying Musical Theater for the past six years. She attended New World School of The Arts High School one of the most prestigious performing arts high schools in the U.S. Mariana has performed in high school and college shows such asPippin, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Life After High School, Very Good Eddie, 100 Years of Broadway, Comedy of Errors and Midsummer Night’s Dream.
Mariana has performed as a soloist in numerous local events in Miami and currently records commercial jingles for many clients ranging from radio stations to local businesses. Besides her vocal and acting training, Mariana also performs classical ballet, modern, tap, jazz, hip-hop and Latin rhythms.
She lives in Miami, Florida and is fluent in Spanish.”

My First Month With Netflix

Chaos Theory Leave a comment »I started using my sister’s netflix account this past month to watch movies on my computer during the hours of boredom at college. Here’s six out of the twenty things I’ve watched. All summaries are from the Netflix video page.
The Vampire Diaries: Pilot Episode. ”Trapped in adolescent bodies, feuding vampire brothers Stefan (Paul Wesley) and
Damon (Ian Somerhalder) vie for the affection of captivating high schooler Elena (Nina Dobrev), who attempts to unravel the many dark secrets of her hometown of Mystic Falls.”
This first episode is full of teenage angst and drama as any good teen vampire series should be, though it was, at time, overwhelming. It’s bookended by voiceovers (I hate voiceovers) of the main characters reading journal entries that start “Dear Diary.”
Based on the books by L.J. Smith.
I give it 1.5 out of 5 stars.
Blue Mountain State: Seasons 1 and 2. “This cheeky comedy series chronicles the myriad misadventures of three incoming college freshmen — quarterback Alex Moran (Darin Brooks), running back Craig Shilo (Sam Jones III) and
mascot Sammy Cacciatore (Chris Romano) — at fictitious gridiron powerhouse Blue Mountain State. Packed with pranks, crass humor and nubile coeds, the show also stars former pro footballer Ed Marinaro as head coach Marty Daniels.”
The second season marks sophomore year and the departure of Craig Shilo, who during the first season became the “token black guy.” He was replaced by an all star quarter back who’s character was not quite as fun and offered less to the dynamic between characters. One essential Character is missing from the above synopsis and that’s Thad, the captain of the football team, middle linebacker and the main reason to watch this show. It’s absolutely hilarious and certainly a comedy series one should hate to love.
Created by Eric Falconer and Chris Romano.
I give it all 5 stars.
Louis CK: Chewed Up. “Unabashed, untamed and uncensored, Louis C.K. brings down the house in this Showtime special drawn from his 2008 Chewed Up tour. The Emmy Award winner tackles the issues that keep audiences rolling in the aisles. Among his observations this time around: what politically correct euphemisms really mean, the worst drink to have before sex, the right age for a girlfriend and what it’s like to be white in America.”
Louis CK is an extremely smart and funny comic. He’s old and jaded and it’s wonderful.
I give it 3 out of 5 stars
All Good Things “After restless real-estate scion David Marks (Ryan Gosling) weds middle-class beauty Katie McCarthy (Kirsten
Dunst) against the wishes of his disapproving father (Frank Langella), suspicions of murder fall on the unmoored heir when his wife mysteriously vanishes. Though he’s not indicted in her disappearance, people with ties to the case begin turning up dead when it’s reopened two decades later — and the unhinged David is the prime suspect.”
This move is very well done in my opinion. It’s interesting and suspenseful in many ways. I found myself hoping that David didn’t kill his wife through out the entire movie. Ryan Gosling gives a great performance, not surprisingly. He once again shows his versatility as an actor on the screen. Kirsten Dunst, who I am not normally a fan of, also gave a very compelling performance that truly showed the depths of her character.
Directed by Andrew Jarecki
I give it 4 out of 5 stars
Cherry. ”Brilliant but naïve Ivy League freshman Aaron (Kyle Gallner) becomes enchanted by free-spirited older student Linda
(Laura Allen) — and when she invites him for dinner, he hopes they hook up. But it turns out Linda’s spunky 14-year-old daughter, Beth (Brittany Robertson), takes a liking to him. As he fends off Beth’s aggressive advances, Aaron finds himself in the middle of an unusual emotional triangle that teaches him some unexpected lessons.”
This film is full of holes and odd plot points that left me asking “why?” At some parts it appeared as though I was watching a College Comedy at other I felt like I was seeing an episode of Cops. It was very unusual, the characters were strange, and I’m not quite sure how the ending came to be, though that was the only part of the movie I enjoyed. The ending was one that made me smile and feel a sense of joy for a character the defied the odds and beat his nagging professor by thinking outside of the box.
Directed by Jeffery Fine
I give it 2.5 out of 5 stars
Chaos Theory “Thanks to a strict regimen of timetables, to-do lists and index cards, efficiency expert Frank Allen (Ryan Reynolds)
lives his life exactly how he wants it. That is, until his well-meaning wife (Emily Mortimer) decides to set their clock back a mere 10 minutes. Suddenly, Frank’s once-safe and predictable life is spinning dangerously out of control … which is the one thing he never bothered to plan for. Stuart Townsend and Sarah Chalke co-star”
Learning that your life has never been what it seemed to be must be a crazy feeling. Ryan Reynolds performance was captivating and raw. His character makes choices by putting things he wants to do on note cards and randomly selecting one each day, he also takes up smoking in order to kill himself. The movie is a story within a story but when I was propelled into Frank Allen’s story I completely forgot that there was ever anything outside of it.
Directed by Marcos Siega
I give it 4 out of 5 stars
Ok, So Here’s The Plan
Posted: November 2, 2011 Filed under: books, jobs, plans, thought | Tags: college, culture, dream, drive, generation, Georgia, glee, graduate, help, hope, Iowa, love, plans, run, school, space, workshop, write Leave a comment »I have a few things that I do that are always the same-from the order of curse words in my turrets driven rants to the constant saying of phrases like “we’re gonna die.” Amongst those things about me that are always the same is the illusion that I have a plan with out actually having a plan.
I’ve stopped planning and, at least consciously, have stopped living with an agenda. I, and I’m sure I’m not alone, created fantasies in my head of what life should be and how life should go. Those fantasies that started at a young age with silly wishes and later progressed into plans and dreams for the future always imploded.
Michael Chabon said “Man makes plans and God laughs.” if I were asked to add to the end of this quote it would read “Man makes plans and God laughs as he urges your friends to stab you in the back, implants fears into your mind and doubt in your heart.” In that state of mind I try my hardest not to look towards the future and hope, wish, or dream for we are not in control of what will be nor are we in control of what is the only thing we are in control of is how we handle a situation.
I won’t lie; I’ve handled many of said situations poorly. I’m 19 and perhaps it’s my job to make mistakes. It was or rather is my job to try but fail to live up to expectations. It was or is my job to forget, to change, to grow, and for all intents and purposes screw shit up. It’s my job to be forgotten, my job to be remembered. It’s my job and perhaps all of our jobs to live in this moment, to react in this moment and to stop planning, for planning only leads us the opposite of the way we originally intended to go.
A few posts ago I outlined a plan to drop out of school and move to Savannah to wait tables and write. If you know me you know that that’s something I wouldn’t do…not exactly a risk taker.
I have, since then and with the help of a dear friend, come up with a new plan. Stay in school, get 30-80 good pages of fiction writing done and ready to send to Iowa and attend graduate school there.
I know not how long this plan will last, but only that it is malleable and may change whenever I see fit. There are no high hopes had, no wishes being made, and no prayers prayed to a God I don’t believe in.
I’ll be sure to keep you all updated
Ghost Writing for Rick Perry

Tell me why I need to take computer science and 4 years of a language. Tell me why I need two lab sciences and two math classes.
Today I met with my advisor who said I should take a creative writing class so I can learn how to edit and perhaps work on getting an internship writing press releases for some company come next year. There is nothing wrong with taking a creative writing class, I would love to, I don’t like the idea of taking a creative writing class and five other classes though. I also don’t like the idea of writing press releases.
I have ideas, ideas that don’t involve the life that includes graduating then law school, someone just needs to think they’re good ideas. How bout I read books that normal 19 year olds don’t read, how bout I start reading Proust, then write about what I think of the book as a 19 year old boy in the 21st century.
OR how about I review movies for some small time magazine.
OR how about I drive around the country and interview girls and guys about their image of the ideal partner, I think Cosmopolitan or 17 magazine might like those interviews…as long as they pay for gas.
Hey I’ll even Ghost write Rick Perry’s autobiography
I mean think about it. I’m a 19 year old male, what age bracket and sex is least likely to read something in your newspaper or magazine or internet blog? If I had to guess I’d say 19-year-old males. Now you add a hip, semi-good looking, average, intelligent 19-year-old to your staff and have him commentate on culture…BOOM…new readers! Just saying. I’m available.
